An existing auto loan does not have to end your plans to sell. It does add an important step: confirming how the lender will be paid and how the title will be released. Joli generally finds vehicles with existing loans easy to handle, but the arrangements should be clear before you hand over the car.
Start with a current payoff quote, not just your statement balance. Discuss the lender, title, and payment arrangements before the final exchange.
Ask your lender for the payoff amount
The amount shown on a monthly statement may not be the amount needed to close the loan on the day of the sale. Request a payoff quote from your lender and ask how long it is valid, whether additional interest accrues after that date, and which payment methods the lender accepts.
Also ask about the title-release process. Different lenders can have different instructions and processing times. Let Joli know there is a loan when you first discuss the vehicle so those details can be considered early.
Understand the difference between your offer and your payoff
If the agreed purchase price is higher than the payoff, the difference is your equity before any other agreed charges or adjustments. If the payoff is higher than the purchase price, there is a shortfall that needs to be addressed to settle the loan.
For a simple example, a $20,000 purchase price and an $18,000 payoff leave a $2,000 difference. A $20,000 purchase price and a $22,000 payoff leave a $2,000 shortfall. These are illustrations, not vehicle valuations or financing offers. Confirm the actual figures and who pays whom before proceeding.
Prepare the information—not sensitive documents in the form
The first step is a conversation, not uploading your loan paperwork. Use the vehicle form to share the car’s details and mention that it has a loan. Do not include bank logins, account passwords, Social Security numbers, or full loan account numbers in the notes.
Joli can then walk you through what is needed to coordinate the purchase. Verify any payment instructions directly with the lender using a contact method you trust.
- Your lender’s name
- A current payoff quote and its valid-through date
- The lender’s instructions for payoff and title release
- The vehicle’s year, make, model, mileage, and condition
- When you want to complete the sale
Set expectations for payment and title timing
The final meeting and the lender’s processing schedule are not necessarily the same thing. Confirm when the lender receives payment, when the title can be released, and when any remaining proceeds would be available to you. Keep copies of the agreed purchase and payoff arrangements.
Joli can pay on the spot in most cases, and preparation can make the final exchange much simpler. That is not a guarantee for every loan or title situation. Her dealership resources and personal service help you work through the details without having to guess what happens next.
