A little preparation can make selling your car much easier. Before the appointment, gather what you have, flag anything missing, and agree on how the paperwork and payment will be handled. This checklist is a starting point for Washington vehicle owners—not a substitute for instructions for your particular title or loan.
Check your title situation early, prepare the car and keys, and confirm the sale paperwork before the handoff.
Check the title before scheduling the handoff
Locate your vehicle title and check that the owner information reflects your situation. If the car has a loan, your lender may be involved in releasing the title. If the title is missing, or the vehicle is part of an estate or another unusual ownership situation, raise that before agreeing on a completion date.
Use Washington Department of Licensing guidance or contact a vehicle licensing office for the requirements that apply to you. Avoid guessing about signatures or filling out ownership details you are unsure about. Joli can discuss the purchase documents with you in advance.
- Vehicle title, or a clear plan for obtaining or releasing it
- Current registration and vehicle identification details
- Identification and required signatures for the ownership situation
- Lender payoff instructions if a loan is outstanding
Prepare accurate vehicle details and records
Write down the current mileage, year, make, and model. Gather available service records and make a short list of known issues. Being clear about condition helps the buyer assess the car and reduces surprises during the visit.
If you have a spare key, key fob, manuals, or accessories included in the sale, set them aside together. Ask the buyer what they need rather than spending time tracking down items that may not be required.
Agree on the sale details before handing over the keys
Confirm the agreed price, payment method, any lender payoff, and who is handling each document. Washington DOL’s seller instructions include signing over the title, completing the bill of sale, removing your license plates, and filing a Report of Sale. The bill of sale and Report of Sale are different documents. Check the current instructions linked below for the reporting deadline and any requirements specific to your vehicle.
Keep copies of your sale records. Seller reporting and the buyer’s title transfer are separate matters; do not assume that one automatically takes care of the other. Check the official requirements even when a buyer is helping with the paperwork.
Clear out the personal things
Check the glove box, console, door pockets, trunk, and under the seats. Remove personal paperwork, parking passes, toll devices, and anything you want to keep. Clear stored addresses, paired phones, and personal accounts from the car’s systems using the manufacturer’s instructions.
If you have connected vehicle services, ask the provider how to remove the vehicle from your account. Discuss insurance changes with your insurer once the sale is completed; the appropriate timing depends on your situation.
Give yourself room for a simple finish
Tell Joli whether you need the car sold fast or prefer a later handoff. With everything prepared ahead of time, the final car, title, and check exchange can be as simple as ten minutes. Missing documents or a lender’s processing schedule can require more time, so preparation matters.
Joli brings 35+ years of automotive experience and Nissan of Everett buying resources to the purchase, with personal service throughout. Start by sharing your vehicle details and ZIP code, then work out the timing together.
